Ok, we are talking about one of the UK's leading rags and the Brit's don't follow much of sporting America but I 100% agree with this result! Rafael Nadal's dramatic win over Roger Federer in the '08 Wimbledon final squeaked past some rugby thing they call 'Miracle of Istanbul' for the Best Sporting Moment of the Decade.
Rafa and Roger at the end of the greatest match ever played.
The voters may have been short sighted in not naming Elin Woods the 'Sporting Moment of the Decade' for her golf swing on Tiger's Escalade. Seems AT&T followed Gillette and others and pulled their sponsorship - this is major stuff here and will be talked about for years. I guess Roger is going to need a new co-star. I bet we won't be seeing that cad sitting next to Mirka in the player's box anytime soon.
Back to Rafa. Actually, back to Rafa and Roger - because it was their match together. It was the pairing and their interesting rivalry that made the match so significant. I don't need to rehash this match, it's been done to death but I will continue to thank them for giving me the greatest match I've ever seen. John McEnroe agrees, end of story.
Of course I didn't watch the epic duel from the comfort of my couch. I spent ALL 8 hours (2 rain delays) watching the drama unfold getting pissed at an Irish pub in the center of Berlin. The pub owner was angry that the match was taking so long and just kept muttering something in broken English about tennis being good only during Boris Becker's golden years. Bah.
