Boy this one makes ne feel old. It just doesn't seem like that long ago when she made her breakthrough in Melbourne - finishing runner-up to Martina Hingis in the '99 final.
Amelie was given a fitting tribute in Paris this evening as the tennis community officially sends her into retirement.
Amelie, ever the graceful and elegant champion, swung that sweet one-handed backhand to 25 singles titles on the WTA tour and amassed more than $15 in prize money. And all-told she spent 39 weeks in the #1 spot.
It wasn't always so easy to be a Mauresmo fan - time and again we would see her crumble at her home Slam at Roland Garros and so often we would watch her fall in the semi's of Slams she seemed so poised to win.
Ah, but we have 2006. The year she finally tasted Grand Slam glory, lifting not only the Australian Open trophy but also the most coveted prize in all of tennis - the Venus Rosewater Dish at Wimbledon.
A CHAMPION IN THE SPOTLIGHT ***** THANK YOU AMELIE.
