With his win over Roger Federer in the US Open semifinals on Saturday Novak has moved to #2, again. Earlier in the year he spent 19 weeks at #2 before Roger regained it just before the US Open.
The race for #1 on the season is over as Rafael Nadal will certainly be there awhile but... the race for #2 will soon hot up and be a fun rankings watch from here on out.
There are merely 410 ranking points separating the two and frankly the hard part falls squarely on Novak's racket. Looking at '09 points to defend Novak has 2,760 - Roger has only 710.
Novak's points include winning the Masters 1000 Paris, a semifinal showing at the Masters 1000 Shanghai and two ATP 500 tournament wins - in Basel and Beijing.
Roger points consist of a semifinal showing at the World Tour Finals and a runner-up finish to Novak in Basel.
See what I mean? So you Fed fans can exhail already.
Novak may need a little divine intervention if he wants to finish the season with his highest year-end ranking yet, that of #2.
