Look out Venus: 6 of Fran's 8 sets have been 0, 1 & 2.

This is V's 12th US Open. This is V's 12th visit to the 4th round: 9-2.
She's won it twice ('00-'01), been to final twice & the Sfs 3 times.
Owing to injury V and Serena can't defend their doubles title.
BUT, Serena attended V's match tonight and looked fantastic.

For a long time in this one Venus was getting out-hit.
But let's just be thankful Venus IS NOT wearing those 'flesh' colored panties.
This is V's 12th US Open. The '00-'01 champ lost in the 4th round last year.
In fact, she has never lost before the 4th round at the Open.

This is a Wimbledon for Venus to forget - 2 Qf losses, singles & now doubles.
Vera however is having a time of it - a semifinalist in both disciplines.
The Williams Sisters had won the last 4 Slams & wanted a true calendar Slam.
A single break of serve in the 3rd ends their dream. Tennis can be cruel.

Tsvetana Pironkova d 2 Venus Williams - 62 63
What on earth happened to Venus? That was a complete beat down.
This is easily the biggest upset of the year.
Venus is a 5 time champ & has been to 8 of the last 10 W finals - now 11.
The story of this match appears to be the unforced errors of Venus: 29.
This is Pironkova's 19th Slam - she's never been past the 2nd round before.
In fact, in Slam first round matches she is 9-10 win/loss.
Pironkova is currently ranked #82 & got as high as #40 in '08.
She will face Vera Zvonareva in the semis - H2H: 1-0/TP.
And look out folks Pironkova beat Vera in that one last year 60 62 in Moscow.

In 3 matches this is only the 2nd time Venus has been pushed to a 6-4 set.
To all those who thought the 5 time champ could be in trouble here - silenced.
She may need to improve her stats going forward... She only served at 65%.
She next faces Jarmila Groth - currently ranked #92, 90 spots lower than V.
A possible rematch of the '07 final looms in the Qfs with Marion Bartoli.

The Wimbledon seeding committee, unlike with the men, went strictly with the rankings for the women's placements. The only players to receive a bump up are the ones ranked below Elena Dementieva (at #5) who withdrew owing to a calf strain.
How on earth did they not seed Justine and Maria MUCH HIGHER? Justine is the 6th best player of the year and Maria is a former champion. The draw could shake out for a Serena/Justine 3rd round match - which is just silly. Hey Wimbledon - if you're gonna mess with the men and their seedings - why not the women?

The win moves them as a doubles team to #1.
Which means they have it all: #'s 1 & 2 in singles - #1 in doubles.
That is unreal on soooooo many levels.
Serena is the 1st woman since Kim Clijsters in '03 to hold both #1 rankings.
They are now the title holders of all 4 Grand Slam events.
They have been quite outspoken about going for the calendar Slam.

When did Nadia become an old veteran? Time sure does fly.
She has been to the Qfs at RG twice before - she won both matches.
This is also her 2nd straight Slam Qf following Australia in January.

Playing her 12th RG this is oddly enough only her 3rd Qf appearance.
She was runner-up to surprise winner Anastasia Myskina in 2004.
Elena is widely considered the best player to never win a Slam.

There is only so much you can blame the wind for those errors.

Kim wins her 19th straight match at the Open tonight.
Kim's into her 14th Sf in a Slam: 6-7. And her 4th at the Open: 3-0.
She will next face familiar foe Venus Williams - H2H: 6-6.
Oh, did I mention that the match tonight was... ugly?
